I really enjoyed our discussions with the Civil Servants. Climbing that famous staircase and seeing photographs of all the previous Prime Ministers through history was such an unbelievable experience!
A group of fourteen Year 10 students were treated to a rare opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the famous building, which included the Cabinet Room and the formal Dining Room, the wooden doors of which were quickly recognised as the background to the television broadcasts during the Covid pandemic.
The students then met with a number of Senior Civil Servants. Prior to the visit, the students had selected the topics they wished to discuss, which included the environment and the cost of living, and prepared questions which they put to the Civil Servants. The session began with these questions and quickly developed into an interesting discussion between the Civil Servants and the students about their chosen topics.
When asked to sum up the most interesting aspect of the visit in one sentence, one student said, “I loved being in the place where all the different Prime Ministers have been and seeing how much history there is in this one building”
Another added “Seeing the desk that the first Prime Minister of the country worked from”
One student expressed what they were all thinking when she said “It was such an amazing experience”
The visit, organised and funded by Trustees of The Ambitious For All Foundation, certainly delivered its aims to provide opportunities beyond the school curriculum – an experience that will be remembered by these students for a very long time!
