"I’ve never seen them so happy, smiling and dancing in front of their peers. Absolutely magical! Worth every penny, just for those moments alone!"
‘One of the best days so far this year! I loved it!’ was the reaction of one Year 7 student who took part. Reading and writing were put on hold for the day as Year 7 showed off their amazing creative talents!
They took part in two art workshops. In the first, led by Kwame, an old friend of Applemore, they learnt the skills and techniques of African art. In the second, run by Mr Wheatley, Head of Art and Photography at the school, they had fun making novelty cards with shells and googly eyes! Then they made music! It was brilliant to feel the energy with which Year 7 tackled the African drumming and lovely to see the smiles on their faces. And who knew that they would be so proficient in playing steel pan drums after only a short space of time. The sound was amazing! Not only did Year 7 learn new skills today, they also learned about and experienced cultures that were very different from their own. And they had great fun doing it!
One student couldn't hide their excitement and said with a big smile on their face, ‘I thought we were just going to listen to the steel pans, I didn’t think they would actually let me play one!’
The Arts Day was organised and financed by the Ambitious for All Foundation. We would like to thank our sponsors who helped fund this event: Olivia Inspires, Cllr Malcolm Wade and Mark Robinson (member of staff) who donated the sponsorship money that he had raised.
Most of all, we would like to thank the fantastic students and staff at Applemore College who made our day such a success, helping the Ambitious For All Foundation make a real difference to the lives of these children. Our thanks to you all!
