The drones were really difficult to control at first, but I soon got the hang of it! It was harder than I thought!
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Day organised by the Foundation for the whole of Year 8 at Applemore College was a triumph!
Year 8 students demonstrated time and time again, their determination and courage when tackling challenging activities on the day: flying drones, programming robots and getting up close to a scary Tarantula spider and an imposing White-Tailed Eagle! They competently and confidently dealt with their robot if it failed its task, quickly reprogramming it to make the micro-adjustments needed for the mission to be accomplished successfully.
The animal encounters were a highlight of the day though, with the steely stare from both the Little Owl and White-Tailed Eagle commanding instant respect from the students, but the star of the show was the loveable albino Hedgehog that delighted everyone who dared to touch it!
All in all, this was a day to remember and one that students will talk about for long time to come!
It was an absolute pleasure to organise the day for these students. They represented themselves and Applemore College impeccably and should be very proud of the positive impression they created with everyone who worked with them. Well done to you all and thank you Year 8!
The Foundation would also like to thank Olivia Inspires and also Cllr Malcom Wade whose donations were invaluable in helping us to ensure the STEM day was such an overwhelming success!
